Open Science is “doing science” so that other researchers can also collaborate and contribute.
For this reason, platforms that allow the reuse, redistribution and reproduction of research and its underlying data and methods are increasingly important.
EOSC isn’t a cloud storage service or even a repository, but a place to search and have access to all European research results, where researchers are able to research and find research services and tools, a place for networking, with a quality label: «Data made in Europe». It allows researchers to access an enormous amount of scientific data generated by research activities and to pool scientific results, improving access to knowledge and thus fostering innovation.
The ambition of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) is to provide European researchers, innovators, companies and citizens with a federated and open multi-disciplinary environment where they can publish, find and re-use data, tools and services for research, innovation and educational purposes. EOSC ultimately aims to develop a Web of FAIR Data and services for science in Europe upon which a wide range of value-added services can be built. These range from visualization and analytics to long-term information preservation or the monitoring of the uptake of open science practices. EU countries and countries associated with Horizon 2020, represented in the EOSC Governance Board, agreed unanimously to run the EOSC as a co-programmed European Partnership under Horizon Europe from 2021.
EOSC is intended to set off the ground by federating existing scientific data infrastructures and digital infrastructures for data exploitation that are now spread across disciplines and EU member states. This will make access to scientific data and other scientific outputs easier and more efficient.
The EOSC Portal is currently operated by the EOSC Enhance (Grant Agreement no. 871160) and EOSC Future (Grant Agreement no. 101017536) projects funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.
